When I was a student teacher I studied in fourth grade. I loved it. Fourth graders were just old enough to understand the concept of ‘school’ and what it can entail; as well as being young enough that they got the jokes and still had purse happiness and joy.
.
While I was a student teacher, I (obviously) taught all the lessons. And I noticed that vocabulary terms weren’t given as high of a priority. So, I took each story that we worked on and created vocabulary quizzes to go with them.
.
Then, at the same school, I had a long-term teaching position that was with – wait for it – fourth grade. It was such a blast. And, it also gave me the opportunity to finish creating all 23 vocabulary quizzes from stories that were taught from the Houghton Mifflin reading book.
Each quiz includes a cover, lesson plan, grading sheet, and answer key. Plus, three separate assessment components. For 4th grade, I focused on knowing the vocabulary terms and their meaning; knowing the synonym or antonym meaning of each vocabulary term (it varies from quiz to quiz), and then using each vocabulary term in a sentence. Lastly, I created a unique border filled with images that relate to each of the stories.
The quizzes were great tools that focused on knowing vocabulary terms and their meanings, understanding the grammar function of synonyms and antonyms, and being able to write complete sentences that utilize the CUPS learning strategy.
Stories from 4th grade include:
Akiak
Grandfather’s Journey
Titanic
By the Shores of Silver Lake
My Name is Maria Isabel
Gloria Estefan
Happy Birthday Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.
Salmon Summer
Here are the links to some of my fourth grade quizzes. All of them are available in my Teachers Pay Teachers Store.

Tomas and the Library Lady Quiz
I hope you find them as useful as my colleagues and I do.

These Vocab quizzes are soo cool. I appreciate how poignant and relevant they are to our society and reinforcing for our students the lessons of great leaders like Dr. King. So smart, so creative!
