Blank Reading Log Form

When I first started teaching, I noticed a big emphasis was put on having children read each night. I really liked that, but the way in which we encouraged (and recorded) our students’ reading wasn’t the best. Which is why I came up with this Adjustable Reading Log.

Daily Reading Section

This reading log is meant to incorporate reading, writing, and basic math skills. It also encourages having a child read from a variety of sources. Plus, all of the reading is done out-loud; and can be done with a partner.

Students read for 20-45 minutes each night (the time depends on the age of the reader). They tell what pages they read from-to, and for how long. The writing comes in when they have to write a 3-5 sentence summary of what they read. As any teacher can tell you, getting students to understand exactly what a summary is is one tricky feat. Which makes it a great way to integrate quick summary work into each night of a student’s learning.

Completed Weekly Reading Log

I’ve gotten great feedback from colleagues and families about how complete the reading log is. Plus, it’s a good tool to use when there are breaks from school. Children seem to especially enjoy being able to incorporate poems, magazines, comic books, and movies into their reading world. You can find this reading log, to purchase, at my TPT store.
