Earth Day, like other nationally recognized days, should serve as a launching point into integrating that day’s beliefs and values into your day. Earth Day, I have to admit, has been the easiest of these days to make a part of my life. Since I was little, I was very interested in the environment, the world around me, and ways in which to protect it. I always enjoyed any chance to get outside and appreciate the ‘green’ of my world.
When I was a classroom teacher, I took the time to create lessons that incorporated the environment. A few of my favorites were: planting seeds in cups in our room, giving students little pine trees to take home and plant, turning off the lights to read, following the ‘life cycle’ of a plastic bag, and taking mini lesson/naps outside in the grass in the sunshine. Each of these were a different way to teach students to care more for the planet, each received various reactions – but most importantly, each was related to the current curriculum, subjects, and standards.
If these learning lessons don’t appeal to you, I’d love to know what you’ve done that has worked for you; or what lessons you tried that didn’t get the response/reaction you were hoping for.
